Aberffraw in Anglesey was the largest court of the princes of Gwynedd, and the chief bard there in the thirteenth century was Einion ap Gwalchmai. It is believed that Einion was brought up at Trewalchmai. Apart from being a skilled poet and musician, Einion was also one of Owain Glyndwr’s bravest soldiers.

Einion wrote poems about the beautiful wife of Ednyfed Fychan who died young. They had a daughter called Angharad and her beauty was spoken of throughout the country. The story goes that the best nobles of Gwynedd were anxious to marry her but her father decided to set a specific task before the person who wanted to marry his daughter. He chose one of the feats of the old Welsh, being hop, skip and jump.

Angharad knew that Einion could easily win the feat, and this was her wish because she was in love with him. The father chose a place to hold the feats, being Maes Abernodwydd, near Plas Gwyn, Pentraeth.

Many nobles came to try and achieve the feat. Two or three of them succeeded in jumping thirty or forty feet and the competing went on throughout the morning and afternoon.

The last to jump was Einion. Hop! Skip! Jump! Fifty feet! He had beaten the other competitors easily. Angharad ran to him and placed her arms around his neck. That was the famous Abernodwydd jump and there was mention of it everywhere. Very soon afterwards Einion and Angharad were married and they lived very happily.
